Summer Smoothie Ideas

Summer Smoothie Ideas

Hola readers,

Today we’re bringing back our tasty column with a look at 3 health-conscious  smoothie recipes, all perfectly refreshing during a hot summer day in Barcelona. Easy, playful, delicious; we tried to avoid the common recipes we all know like strawberry or banana, and instead bring you something you’ve never tried before. In only a few minutes, you can transform a handful of ingredients into a cool treat for yourself and your flatmates.

The friends you make in your new shared flat will be begging for the recipe after getting just a taste of any one of these unique smoothies. They may even be able to help you come up with ways to change the recipe and make it your own! If you’re still looking for an accommodation in the city, check out our neighborhood descriptions for help finding the best location for you. Okay, let’s get back to the blend.

  •  Strawberry-Raspberry Mint:

This smoothie is probably the closest to a classic recipe that we have today. If you want to keep it super simple, you could just leave out the mint and have a silky berry smoothie. Here, the frozen berries and banana are what will thicken the smoothie, keeping it from getting watered down or chunky with ice. Without any liquid this will be pretty thick, so you may want to add in some apple juice or coconut milk to thin it out. If you don’t have time to freeze the berries, just add a few ice cubes to the mix. To create this smoothie, you will need:

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • ¾ cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or other sweetener
  • bundle of mint leaves
  • splash of apple juice, orange juice, or coconut milk to correct consistency

Creation: Peel and cut the banana into slices and place them, along with the berries, into the blender. Then, put the yogurt, honey, and a few mint leaves into the blender and blend, increasing the speed from low to high. If this seems too thick for you, add your chosen liquid into the mix and continue blending. Once done, pour into 2 small glasses, garnish with mint leaves, and enjoy.

  • Mango Lime:

In this smoothie you’ll find a cool, sweet drink with a tangy twist. The frozen mango gives this smoothie its thickness, as well as most of its flavor. Again, if you can’t freeze the mango feel free to add a few ice cubes to get a thicker smoothie texture. For this smoothie, you will need:

  • 2 cups frozen mango chunks
  • juice of 1 lime/lemon
  • 1 banana
  • ¾ cups plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or sweetener to taste
  • coconut milk/water to correct consistency

Creation: With the mango chunks in the blender, cut the lime in half and squeeze its juice on top. Peel and cut the banana in as well, then include the yogurt and sweetener. Blend while increasing the blender’s power from low to high until smooth. Slowly add in your chosen liquid until it is the consistency you desire. Split this among two small glasses and garnish with a slice of lime or a lime twist.

  • Orange Watermelon:

Four ingredients and no time at all will get you this delicious smoothie. The fresh watermelon and orange will make this almost like a juice or a slushy, but the ice and banana will help it get closer to that smoothie consistency we’re looking for. If you’re looking for a simple drink, you can’t go wrong with this one. You will need:

  • 1 ½ cups watermelon
  • 1 to 2 oranges
  • ½ frozen banana
  • ½ cup ice cubes

Creation: Cube the watermelon and toss that into the blender. Then peel the orange, getting as much of the white bits off (this is called the pith) as possible. Segment the orange and put those segments into the blender, followed by the sliced or broken up banana and the ice cubes. Blend these ingredients until smooth, pour it into two small glasses, and garnish with mint leaves or an orange slice.
